A bank manager asked an artist to paint his portrait. The artist agreed and the bank manager sat for the artist. The artist took several weeks to finish the portrait. He invited the bank manager to see the portrait but when the bank manager saw it he was indignant. “Who the hell is this? He yelled. It looks nothing like me. Do you really think I am going to pay you for this?” With these words he turned and stormed out of the artist’s studio. The artist, who was a very calm person, said nothing.
Some time later the artist held an exhibition. He displayed many paintings and the exhibition proved to be very successful. People came from far and wide to see it. One of the most popular paintings was titled “Thief”. This was, of course, the portrait of the bank manager.
When the bank manager heard about this he was furious and hurried off to the gallery to confront the artist. When he arrived, he strode up to the artist and demanded that he take the painting down as it would damage his reputation. The artist refused, saying, “You said it doesn’t look like you so you don’t have to worry about people recognizing you. If you want it taken down you will have to buy it”. At last the bank manager had no choice but to buy the painting at double the original price.
