The Enormous Melon
There was once a poor farmer who grew fruit and vegetables on his small plot of land. Now it happened that one year he grew an enormous melon. This melon was much bigger than anyone had ever seen. People came from far and wide to marvel at this melon for none had seen it’s like before. The farmer, after careful consideration, decided to present the melon to the king. The king was very popular with his people so everyone thought it was a wise decision.
The king was delighted with such an unusual gift and at once declared the melon a national treasure. And of course he didn’t forget the farmer. He gave the farmer his very best horse from his stables. It was a beautiful black stallion which some people said was the fastest horse that had ever lived. The farmer returned home happy.
The story of the melon and the king’s generosity was repeated so often that soon everyone in the country knew of it. A rich man thought about this and came up with what he thought was a clever plan. “If the king gives such a wonderful horse for just a melon what will he give me for a much better gift? He searched his country and the neighboring countries for the fastest, strongest horse he could find. When, at last, he had found and had paid an enormous sum of money for the horse, he made his way to the palace. Again the king was very pleased with the gift and once again he wanted to reward the person giving him the gift .After a moment’s thought he declared,” Such a wonderful gift deserves something equally wonderful in return.”
