The Boy and the Old Lady
Outside a small village there was a pond. The pond was surrounded by trees and flowers. In the pond was a type of grass that people would take home and cook. The pond was very popular with the children of the village. Every summer they would go there to play and swim.
One of those children, called Ryan, would fish there. He took his fishing line and worms to use as bait. When he caught fish he would then take them to market to sell. The money he got for the fish, he would use to pay his school fees.
One morning, Ryan had caught seven big fish which he put in his bucket. At this time an old lady from the village came to the pond to cut some grass. The old lady was a devout Buddhist and a vegetarian so she was dismayed to see the fish in the bucket. She whispered a Buddhist prayer for the fish.
Although Ryan was poor he was a generous boy so when he saw the old lady looking at the fish he offered her some.” Grandma, please take two. You can take them home to make some soup.” The old lady responded by saying,”Oh Ryan, the fish are so poor. Why don’t you take pity on them?” Ryan considered this for a moment and said,” Well, why don’t the fish have pity on the worms?”
