The Fairy and the Workmen
A workman, cutting wood by the side of a pool, dropped his axe, by accident, into the deep pool. Now the workman had no way to earn a living so he sat down sadly on the bank and cried loudly. A fairy appeared and asked him what was wrong. After he told her of his misfortune, the fairy dived into the pool, and bringing up a golden axe asked if that were the one he had lost. The workman said it was not his. So the fairy dived beneath the water a second time, returned with a silver axe in his hand, and again asked the workman if it were his. When the workman said it was not, so the fairy dived into the pool for the third time and brought up the axe that had been lost. The workman took it happily and thanked the fairy.
The fairy, pleased with his honesty, gave him the golden and silver axes in addition to his own. The workman, after returning home, told his friends what had happened. One of them at once decided to try and have the same good fortune for himself. He ran to the pool and threw his axe, on purpose, into the pool at the same place, and sat down on the bank to weep. The fairy appeared to him just as he hoped she would, and having learned the cause of his sadness, dived into the pool and brought up a golden axe, asked if he had lost it. The workman seized it greedily, and said that it was the very same axe that he had lost. The fairy, displeased at his cunning, not only took away the golden axe, but refused to recover for him the axe he had thrown into the pool.
